Major international collaborative research projects

  • The US National Institutes of Health awarded me a major 3 year research grant (for around A$100,000 per year) to study how the gravity sensors of the inner ear control the axis of eye movement in human subjects and patients. This has paid for the construction of a 2m human centrifuge at Royal Prince Alfred hospital and the construction of a 6 m linear sled for the testing of otolith function.
  • A major 4 year research project (1995-1999 called ATLAS) aimed at testing the gravity sensory systems of astronauts during and after space flight in 1998 was funded for around A$1,000,000 by NASA. This research team is led by Dr Bernard Cohen in New York and includes a group in France and our group Sydney. I was a team member of this grant which was won in open international competition.
  • I was a collaborating partner (1995-1999) in an international research consortium which developed a new high-speed video chip and associated image processing software for the measurement of eye movements. This work was funded for 1.25M ECUs by the European Union ESPRIT projects and was led from Berlin (Clarke) with partners in Sweden, Spain, England.
  • I am a member of a team for a European Space Agency grant to investigate the effect of microgravity on the vestibular function of developing rats in a project which will be operated by NASA. The team leader is Prof Marc Jamon.
