Dr Kashem M. Abul

Bsc (Hons, Agriculture), MSc (Biochemistry), PhD (Molecular Biology), MSc (Pathology)

Lab Manager and Research Fellow

Welcome to Proteomics World at the University of Sydney.

I am enjoying coordinating and supervising proteomics, peptodomics and protein chemistry work in the psychopharmacology laboratory. I completed my degree in biochemistry (Bangladesh), M.Sc in Neuroscience (Sydney) and gained my Ph D in Molecular Biology from Niigata University (Japan). My research goals are (a) proteomics and metabolomics method development for analysis of biochemical constituents particularly protein and peptides in relation to addiction biology, (b) to discover biomarker signatures for vulnerability to addiction and develop diagnostics to identify individuals 'at risk', (c) understanding molecular mechanisms of antipsychotic drug induced side effects particularly neuronal and abnormal glucose metabolism. When I have time, I enjoy doing different social activities.

I recently returned to the psychopharmacology lab, six years after having worked here as a research assistant. Between 2002 and 2007, I completed a PhD with Dr. Peter Wilson at the University of New England.

My research area was the microanatomy, physiology and cholinergic modulation of memory circuitry in the mammalian medial temporal lobe. I spent much of my candidature developing a novel ultrastructural immunocytochemistry protocol and visualising injected neurons in the electron microscope.

Now I hope to return to light microscope immunocytochemistry, which will be used to investigate the effects of psychoactive drugs such as methamphetamine, MDMA and GHB.

Lauren Monds

BSc (Hons, Sydney)

Research Assistant and Psychology Tutor

I completed my honours year in 2007, with Dr Leonora Long as my supervisor. My thesis title was: Modelling of the long term effects of cannabis use on the adolescent rat - implications for the negative and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia, and antipsychotic efficacy.

My current research involves investigating the long term effects of the combination of cannabis and methamphetamine on the brain using a variety of animal models.

I am also involved in teaching tutorials for 2nd and 3rd year psychology courses.
