The emergence test is used as a measure of anxiety. The amount of time spent in the open and in the hide box is recorded, as well as the amount of time taken for the rat to first emerge form the box. Rats exhibiting high anxiety tend to spend little or no time in the open area, whilst non-anxious rats will freely explore the enclosure.
