Funding for the Psycho-Oncology Co-operative Trials Group

Congratulations to the Psycho-Oncology Co-operative Trials Group (PoCoG) (of which Professor Phyllis Butow is the initial Chair) on receiving $541,000 in funding for 2006-2007 from the Dept of Health and Ageing, Australian Federal Government, through the Strengthening Cancer Care initiative - with a promise in principle of a similar level of funding over the next 3 years.

The funding is geared towards providing:

  • infrastructure support,
  • start-up funding for an initial PoCoG project (establishing the level of psychological morbidity, unmet need and patterns of care in 1st generation, culturally and linguistically diverse cancer patients and their partners) and
  • staff to establish a quality of life office to support quality of life sub-studies within other cancer clinical trial groups.

The initial co-ordinator of PoCoG, Dr Rebecca Hagerty, and the new staff will be housed within the School of Psychology at the University of Sydney. This exciting initiative is aimed at increasing Australia's capacity to undertake large-scale, clinically relevant, Psycho-Oncology studies and to promote multidisciplinary research in this area. PoCoG now has a website up and running, kindly supported by the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia. PoCoG already has over 150 members and is growing fast.
