I am a research psychologist and joined the Medical Psychology Research Unit at the University of Sydney in April 2006 after completing my PhD with the School of Psychology at the University of Wollongong. I am currently working on a research project involving the implementation of question prompt lists (QPLs) for cancer patients across four major hospitals in NSW, the aim of which is to promote enhanced doctor-patient communication and encourage greater patient involvement during medical consultations. As research outcomes rarely become integrated into standard practice, it is believed that this implementation project will contribute to the development of the research culture within the NSW health system and help ensure routine provision of evidence-based tools to cancer patients.

Research Associate

Dr Karen Hancock (Medicine)

BSc (Psych)(Hons), PhD.

I am a psychologist and have been conducting clinical research in health science for 16 years. The majority of the research I have been involved in has been aimed at designing, implementing and evaluating interventions that are designed to promote best practice in health care. My current research interests are in palliative care and the health of older people.

I joined the MPRU in August 2005 as a Research Associate working on a palliative care project under the supervision of Dr Josephine Clayton. This study addresses communication by health professionals of prognosis and end-of-life issues in people with advanced, life-limiting, progressive illnesses, and their caregivers. The study has developed guidelines for health professionals to discuss this topic, and is developing, implementing and evaluating a communication skills training program for doctors.

I have two sons aged 9 and 12, and my interests are joining them in their many sporting activities, particularly waterskiing and surfing. I like dancing and singing Karaoke, but only if I can wear a wig.

Research Co-ordinator

Dr Judy Wilson

BA (Hons), )  M Clin Psych  PhD

I am coordinator of the kConFab Psychosocial Study at the MPRU, a role which I commenced 3 years ago, and which I currently job-share with Dr Tonia Corner. This study is being conducted in collaboration with the Kathleen Cuningham Consortium for research into Familial breast cancer (kConFab), and examines the role of psychosocial factors (such as anxiety, depression, stress and social support) in the development of breast cancer among women from high-risk families.

Prior to commencing work at the MPRU, I completed a Master of Clinical Psychology/PhD degree at Macquarie University in 2003. My PhD research examined cognitive factors in social phobia, as well as cognitive factors which differentiate social anxiety versus depression.

Research Co-ordinator

Dr Tonia Corner

BA (Hons), MClinPsy, PhD
I am a clinical psychologist and currently co-ordinate the kConFab Psychosocial study for women at high risk of breast cancer, while Dr Judy Wilson is on maternity leave. This is a collaborative Australasian study working in conjunction with the Kathleen Cuningham Consortium for research into Familial breast cancer (kConFab). The main study aim is to assess the impact of psychosocial factors (such as stress, anxiety, depression and social support) on the risk of developing breast cancer in women from high-risk families. Another aim of the study is to examine the predictors and outcomes of prophylactic (i.e. risk-reduction) surgery among women from this population.

I completed a combined Masters of Clinical Psychology and PhD degree at Macquarie University in 2003. My PhD research focused on young people's own interpretations of their substance misuse. I continued this interest in clinical practice when working for two years in Child and Adolescent Mental Health teams. In October 2005 I returned to research part-time in taking on this role and also currently work as a clinical psychologist in private practice.
