NSW Cancer Institute Clinical Fellow

Belinda Thewes

I am a Clinical Research Psychologist and have been involved in clinical practice with cancer patients and psycho-oncology research since completing my Masters of Clinical Psychology, at the University of Sydney in 2000. From 2000-2005 I worked with the Psychosocial Research Office, Department of Medical Oncology, Prince of Wales Hospital. In 2005 I completed a PhD exploring the fertility- and menopause-related information needs of younger women with a diagnosis of breast cancer. My other research interests include issues related to psychosocial aspects of breast cancer and hereditary cancers, psychological screening, patient education and decision-making, and cancer survivorship issues.

I have returned to the MPRU this year to take up a Cancer Institue of NSW Psychosocial Clinical Fellowship. As part of my fellowship role I am conducting research exploring the impact of routine psychological screening in rural cancer clinics, as well as clinical work with cancer patients and their families within Greater Southern Area Health Service. I am based at Moruya Community Health Centre, on the beautiful south coast of NSW. I receive clinical and research supervision from Prof. Phyllis Butow, as well as academic support from the MPRU.

During the past 8 years, I have pursued my interest in the discipline of Psycho-Oncology; initially as a Ph.D. candidate focusing on psychosexual adjustment in women treated for gynaecological cancer. At completion of my PhD in 2003 I became a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at MPRU and since 2005 have concurrently held a part-time position as research psychologist with the Sydney Gynaecologic Oncology Group, Sydney Cancer Centre, RPA Hospital.

As a Postdoc Fellow, I co-ordinate and supervise a wide range of research programs in collaboration with local, national and international research bodies:

Doctor-patient Communication in the Oncological Setting
  • Evaluation of communication skills training to improve the process of informed consent to standard treatment options and clinical trials
  • Development and evaluation of a Decision Aid for women considering participation in a breast cancer prevention trial (IBIS-II)
  • Evaluating references to complementary therapy use in consultations
  • Comparison of coding systems evaluating shared decision-making
  • Treatment preferences of ovarian cancer patients with raising tumour marker (CA 125) and the development of a decision aid to assist in decision-making about treatment options
Psycho-sexual Adjustment & Quality of Life of Cancer Patients
  • Psychosexual adjustment and interventions to improve sexual life following gynaecological, breast and prostate cancer.
  • Quality of life following pre-invasive cervical cancer; including psychological impact of HPV vaccination.
Cancer Support Services
  • Assessment of challenges, support/training needs and psychological wellbeing of cancer and MS support group leaders and the development and evaluation of strategies to assist cancer support group leaders

I'm also a lecturer in the new Health Psychology Masters course at the School of Psychology, University of Sydney and supervise Honours, Masters and PhD students, which I find a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

I am Senior Lecturer and Cancer Institute NSW Clinical Research Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney. I am also a Staff Specialist in Palliative Medicine and Head of Department of Palliative Care at Royal North Shore Hospital. I spend 50% of my time in clinical palliative medicine practice and 50% in research. I have worked in collaboration with the MPRU since 2000, including completion of a PhD entitled "Enhancing Doctor Patient Communication in Palliative Medicine". My PhD research involved exploring optimal ways of discussing prognosis and end-of-life issues in a palliative care setting and then developing, piloting and evaluating a communication tool (question prompt list) for palliative care patients and their families.

Currently I am the Chief Investigator on a NHMRC funded project regarding discussion of prognosis and end-of-life issues with palliative care patients and their families. This project involves: development of evidence based guidelines on this topic (completed); evaluation of current practice (in progress); development of an evidence based training program (in progress) and subsequent evaluation of this training program. I am passionate about research that may enhance the palliative care of patients and their families facing an advanced progressive life limiting illness.
