Development
and evaluation of a tool to communicate risk to women at risk of
developing breast cancer
This project aimed (i) to document current practice in risk
communication to women from high-risk breast cancer families, attending
familial cancer services, (ii) to develop a communication aid to assist
women and geneticists/genetic counsellors to enhance risk communication
and (iii) to evaluate the impact of the aid on patient outcomes. 193
audiotapes of genetic counseling sessions were analysed using a
quantitative coding system, and linguistic discourse analysis. The tool
was developed by an expert panel and piloted in 30 women. It has now
been produced by the Genetic Education Service of NSW for distribution
to all states.
