Cultural aspects of cancer care
- Communicating prognosis to different cultural groups
This study will compare communication of a poor prognosis within
the first and second oncology consultations to a) ethnic groups
(the Chinese and Greek) living in a multi-cultural society (Australia)
and b) long-term Anglo-Saxon residents of that country, by audio-taping,
transcribing and coding those consultations. This will allow
identification of current practice in dealing with cultural
disparities. We secondly intend to elicit the experiences of
the patients and families who attend these consultations, and
to obtain the views of these patients and their families, and
of opinion leaders and medical professionals from their communities,
regarding ideal communication of a poor prognosis. This will
allow an exploration of the similarities and differences between
the views of these various sources, a comparison between actual
and preferred practice, and the development of guidelines based
on the views of the participants themselves.
