The following information is supplied for the benefit of people who are attempting to send email to the School of Psychology at the University of Sydney and experiencing problems.

We are running a version of sendmail within the School that has various anti-spam and anti-virus features enabled, thus enabling us reduce the amount of Unsolicited Commercial Email(UCE) and Viri sent to our sites.

• Relaying. - Relaying is permitted from a number of restricted locations, notably,
  • Local machines.
  • Affiliated research sites.
  We do not permit relaying for any other purpose.

• Mail from selected sites. - Any site, domain or user that repeatedly sends UCE to any of our sites will be blocked. There will be no warnings. If you are a sender of UCE PLEASE take this as a request to remove any addresses that end in "su.oz.au" and "usyd.edu.au" from your lists.

• Mail to user@*.su.oz.au is deprecated. - If you are sending mail to user@*.su.oz.au enquire below for directions on how to correctly address the mail. If you are a sender of UCE PLEASE take this as a request to remove any addresses that end in "su.oz.au" from your lists.

• File attachments. - Emails with file attachments having any of the following extensions will be rejected:-

  	.ade .adp .bas .bat .chm .cmd .com .cpl .crt .exe .hlp .hta .inf
  	.ins .isp .js  .jse .lnk .mdb .mde .msc .msi .msp .mst .pcd .pif
  	.reg .scr .sct .shs .shb .url .vb .vbe .vbs .wsc .wsf .wsh
  	

  Documents, spreadsheets and images are allowable content. If you want to send an attachment that would normally be rejected, encode it as an archive (like .zip)

• Illegal content, -In order to reduce SPAM, mail whose content contains obvious SPAM (money, sex, drugs etc) will be rejected

  This filtering is aimed at reducing SPAM rather than a crusade about sexual language, drugs ...

• All email will be filtered. - Both internal and external email will be filtered

• Greylisting filtering. - To further reduce the amount SPAM we receive we use a technique called 'greylisting'. Emails from outside the University are initially rejected with an 'I am busy, try again latter' error message. If the email is resent after an initial 10 minutes, it is accepted and further emails from the same location are immediatedly accepted for the next month. We do not delay emails from the following domains:-

  	.usyd.edu.au
  	.edu.au
  	.gov.au
  	.ac.uk
  	.edu
  	.gov
  	

• Maximum message size. - The maximum allowable size of a single email message is 15 megabytes.
