Human Aerospace Laboratory

The Human Aerospace Laboratory, funded by NASA, primarily conducts research into the effects of spaceflight on neurological function in humans. Our current projects include the development of an analog of the effects of spaceflight on sensorimotor function (gait, balance, gaze) utilizing electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve, development of pre-flight training to improve perfromance during flight, and assessment of the effects of long-duration spaceflight on an astronauts ability to operate aircraft, automobiles, and rovers. We are actively involved in translating techniques and technology developed for our NASA experiments to Earth-based applications, such as ambulatory assessment of gait in movement disorders (Parkinson’s disease).
