Gambling Treatment Clinic

Since 1999, the Gambling Treatment and Research Clinic (GTRC) at the University of Sydney has aimed to develop best practise treatment for problem gambling. The GTRC is currently under the directorship of Professor Alex Blaszczynski, an internationally renowned expert in the field of gambling treatment and research and the recipient of several awards in recognition of his contributions to research in this field.

The Gambling Treatment and Research Clinic is a free, confidential, face-to-face counselling service operating within the School of Psychology, at the University of Sydney, Camperdown, Lidcombe, Parramatta and Campbelltown Campuses. Our clinicians are highly experienced and have contributed significantly to the development of the program.

Our approach to problem gambling treatment is unique, and innovative.
Based on cognitive theory of gambling, and inspired by diverse fields such as philosophy and complexity theory, our approach aims to modify core beliefs, and build the gamblers capacity to make responsible decisions.

We have recently introduced a post-graduate clinical intern placement program as part of our efforts to improve service provision to problem gamblers and foster continued involvement in the field. Feedback from past student has been very positive and highly encouraging.

During the first half of placement, you will receive intensive training, weekly supervision and have the opportunity to participate in co-therapy. In the second half of placement you will have responsibility for your own client load. In addition to seeing clients you will be required to maintain your files and meet the administrative duties of the role which include intake and entering data into our titanium system. The Clinic offers modern facilities. You will be allocated a private workspace and counselling room.

The GTRC is funded by a grant from the Responsible Gaming Fund (RGF), a branch of the Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing in the NSW State Government. The RGF currently funds similar treatment services throughout the state. These services are provided free of charge to individuals with gambling problems and their families.
