The University of Sydney Working Group on Emotional Resilience in Infancy and Childhood (ERIC) brings together researchers who are interested in the emotional wellbeing of children growing up in our society. Throughout development, children face many emotional challenges that must be negotiated, managed, understood and resolved. Thankfully, most infants and children face these challenges within a supportive network of family and social relationships, and as they become older they also become increasingly able to meet these challenges with confidence and flexibility. Within this context, emotional resilience refers to children’s abilities to encounter and address emotionally challenging situations in an adaptive and positive way, such that they not only resolve such situations but also improves their capacity to face similar situations in the future. Emotionally resilient children are able to cope with difficult emotional situations and ‘spring back’ in such a way that they are ready for the next challenge that life throws them.
