How to Apply

Am I a local student?

Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens are classified as local students for application. Local students are to apply through the Faculty of Science.

Am I an international student?

You are an international fee-paying student if you are NOT an Australian citizen (including dual citizens), or a New Zealand citizen (including dual citizens), or a permanent resident of Australia.You are an international fee-paying student if you hold a permit for temporary entry to Australia. For example, if your status is: overseas student, permanent resident of New Zealand, diplomat, temporary resident who hold permits for work purposes, refugee or a dependent of any of the above. For more information contact the International Office. International students are to apply through the International Office.

How do I apply for the Doctor of Clinical Psychology/Master of Science (DCP/MSc) program?

All information regarding the DCP/MSc program is available from the Clinical Psychology Unit website under Future Students. Download the application forms from the Clinical Psychology Unit website under Future Students/ Applying/ Application Forms. Submit the completed application forms and supporting documentation to the Faculty of Science or International Office by the closing date.

What is the closing date for application to the DCP/MSc program?

The last Friday in October of each year.

Can I use last years forms to apply for this year?

No. Please wait until the application forms for the current year are posted on the web. Application forms are reviewed in September each year. As soon as the forms have been reviewed they will be posted on the web.The previous years forms are intended as a guide only, as they are subject to change each year.

What do I do if I am having trouble downloading the application forms?

The application forms are available as editable Adobe Acrobat PDF files. Click on the link application forms. Download each of the application forms to your desktop. Try opening the files within Adobe Acrobat. If you still have difficulty downloading the forms, contact the Clinical Psychology Unit or Faculty of Science.

Are the application forms available in a word format?

No. Application forms are not available in a word format. The application forms are only available in a Adobe Acrobat PDF format. However, the forms are in an editable PDF format which means that you can type your responses on the application form on your computer (just as you would for a word file). You just need to click on the text box to type your response or click on the tick box to select a yes or no box. Then print the form for submission.

Can I email my completed application forms?

No. Application forms are available in an editable Adobe Acrobat PDF format to download. The editable PDF format means that you may download the forms and type your responses on your computer. However, you must then print out the application forms. Submit the completed and printed application forms to the Faculty of Science or International Office, in person or through the post.

Can I attach information (eg. CV) to the application form instead of filling it out?

No. You must complete your responses within the spaces provided on the application form. Do not simply attach extra pages refering back to the application form. However, if you have completed your reponses in the spaces provided on the application, and need further space, you may attach further information, however, please complete the most relevant information on the application form as this is what will be considered foremost.

What if I need more space to complete my responses on the application form?

What if I am currently completing honours and my results are still pending at the time of application?

Please record "PENDING" on the application form in the 'Results Complete or Pending' box under 'Undergraduate tertiary qualifications in psychology'. Please be sure to record your WAM or GPA for your degree overall as is known to date, eg. up to Semester 1 of fourth year. Please record the name, phone number and email address of your honours coordinator so that we may verify your honours results once they are available. Once you have received written confirmation of your results please forward the results notice to the Faculty of Science.

Do I need to submit a research proposal with my application?

No, at this stage of application it is not necessary to submit a research proposal with your application. The DCP/MSc is a double degree, initially all candidates enrol only in the Doctor of Clinical Psychology (coursework degree), it is not until second semester of second year that candidates enrol in the Master of science (research degree). Therefore there are no research requirements at the application stage.

Do I need to find a research supervisor before applying for the DCP?

No, at this stage of application, it is not necessary to be arrange research supervision. Students do not formally enrol in the research degree (Master of Science), until second semester of second year. Research topics, projects and supervisors are determined at a later date once enrolled in the program. Students are only required to submit a detailed research proposal by the end of their first year of the DCP.

Do I submit the referee reports with my application or does my referee send the reports directly to the University?

Please ask the referee to return the completed referee report directly to the applicant. The referee is to send the report in a sealed envelope and sign the back. Referee reports are intended to be confidential and not to be opened by the applicant. The applicant is to include the confidential referee reports for submission along with all other application documents. The applicant is to ensure that the referee reports and application forms are completed and submitted together by the last Friday in October. If any of the application forms are missing by the application closing date, including one of the referee reports, the application will be considered incomplete and can not be evaluated nor proceed to interview. The incomplete application will be returned to the applicant in the mail.

Can I submit my referee reports separately to my application form?

No. You must submit your two referee reports together with your application form and supporting documentation. Application forms must be submitted together in one package. If an application is received at the Faculty of Science or International Office without two referee reports attached, it will be returned to the applicant in the mail. This may mean that your application will not be received by the appliation closing date for processing and cannot proceed to interview.

Will my application be accepted if it is post marked with the application closing date?

No, your complete application must be received at the Faculty of Science or International Office by 1pm on the closing date. Applications received at the Faculty of Science or International Office after the closing date will not be considered.

If I submit my application late, will it be considered?

No, applications not received at the Faculty of Science or International Office by 1pm on the closing date, including those 'post marked' with the closing date, will be considered late. Late applications will not be considered. Late applications can not be evaluated nor proceed to the selection interview. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure the application is submitted by the closing date.

What happens to incomplete applications?

DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION FORM TO THE FACULTY OF SCIENCE OR INTERNATIONAL OFFICE WITHOUT ATTACHING TWO REFEREE REPORTS AND THE SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION. Application forms must be submitted together in one package. If one or more of the application forms is missing, the application will be considered incomplete. The Faculty of Science or International Office will return the application in the mail to the applicant. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure the application is complete. Incomplete applications can not be evaluated nor proceed to the selection interview.

What may I submit as proof of residency?

The only forms of evidence of proof of residency accepted are: a certified copy of a passport, a certified copy of a birth certificate or a certified copy of a citizenship certificate.

When do I need to submit my application by?

For admission in March 2008, you must submit your application by 1pm on Friday 26 October.

What happens once I have submited my application?

Once processed by the Faculty of Science and International Office the application is forwarded to the Clinical Psychology Unit for evaluation. Successful applicants will be contacted by Friday 16 November to be offered a selection intervew. Unsuccessful applicants will be sent a letter by the Faculty of Science by the first week of December.
