Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) for Local students
For local students, ten HECS-based Commonwealth supported places (CSP) awarded on academic merit, may be available, subject to University discretion and confirmation. The CSP places are classified as Student Contribution Band 1. In 2008, the fees for CSP places were $106.15 per credit point, for example, $5,095 for 48 credit points for first year, $3,821 for 36 credit points for second year, a total of $8,917 for the DCP/MSc program, as the third year is RTS funded therefore does not incur coursework fees.
The HECS-based CSP places are awarded on academic merit and awarded to the most highly ranked applicants. Recipients must also be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place i.e. be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen. Merit places are based on academic merit. Recipients of the places must enrol AND REMAIN ENROLLED on a full-time basis, and are expected to accept the place in the semester of offer: no deferral will be permitted. Students wishing to apply for a HECS Equity place will need to contact the Faculty of Science. HECS Equity places are normally applied for at enrolment.
Full fee places for Local students
Students must satisfactorily complete 84 credit points of study to be eligible to graduate from the DCP/MSc. Local student coursework fees for the DCP/MSc are due up-front and will be $365 per credit point, a total of $30,660 for the degree. The research component of the DCP (either MSc or PhD) will be Research Training Scheme (RTS)-funded and therefore will not incur course fees. Fees may change on an annual basis, subject to University discretion. The RTS Scheme, administered by the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) provides HECS Exemptions for Commonwealth-funded higher degree research (HDR) students for the duration of an accredited HDR course, up to a maximum of four (4) years' full-time equivalent study for a doctorate by research and two (2) years' full time equivalent study for a masters's by research. The RTS replaces the Research Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) Exemptions Scheme.
Full fee places for International students
For International students, please contact the International Office for accurate information. However, as an indication, International student coursework fees are A$28,320 per year for each enrolled year of study. Therefore a total of A$84,960 for the DCP/MSc. International students who are eligible to transfer to a DCP & PhD must pay for each enrolled year of study, eg. A$141,600 for five years. International students are also required to pay for health insurance in Australia.
Other fees
Students may choose to subscibe to the Students' Representative Council (SRC), the University of Sydney Union (Union), the Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association (SUPRA - postgraduate students only) and Sydney University Sport (SUS - undergraduate students only). As of July 1 2006 voluntary student unionism legislation was introduced and subscription fees are no longer compulsory. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
FEE-HELP
FEE-HELP is an interest free loan given to eligible fee-paying students to help pay part or all of their tuition fees. A FEE-HELP loan can cover all or part of a student’s tuition fees. Students repay their loan through the tax system once their income is above the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment. A maximum of $50,000 in tuition fees may be paid using FEE-HELP over a student’s lifetime. This is the FEE-HELP limit. This limit is indexed each year. A loan fee of 20% applies to FEE-HELP loans for undergraduate courses of study. The $50,000 FEE-HELP limit does not include the loan fee. No loan fee applies to FEE-HELP loans for postgraduate courses, bridging courses for overseas trained professionals, enabling courses or units of study undertaken directly with Open Universities Australia (formerly OLA). The Commonwealth pays the amount of the loan directly to the student’s provider.
HECS-HELP
HECS-HELP loans are available to eligible students enrolled in Commonwealth supported places (CSP). A HECS-HELP loan will cover all or part of the student contribution amount. If you receive a HECS-HELP loan, the Australian Government pays the loan amount directly to your higher education provider on your behalf and a HECS-HELP debt is recorded with the Tax Office. There are no loan fees charged on HECS-HELP loans.
Youth Allowance and Austudy
As a full-time student, you may be eligible for Youth Allowance or Austudy (an allowance for students aged 25 or older). It is important that you put in an application, even if you think you may not be eligible. Please contact your local Centrelink office for more information. Financial Assistance Office
The Financial Assistance Office provides interest free loans and bursaries to students in financial need. Financial assistance is for essential living and study related expenses, not for tuition fees and HECS payments. It is not meant to provide ongoing income support but to supplement other income and to help in emergencies such as paying housing bond, rent, household bills, medical expenses and buying textbooks and equipment and helping with compulsory excursions. Casual Employment Service
The Casual Employment Service helps enrolled degree students find casual and part-time work during their studies and in University vacations.
