Course Information

Doctor of Clinical Psychology/Master of Science (DCP/MSc)

The DCP/MSc provides psychology graduates with doctorate level clinical and research training in clinical psychology. The program adopts a Scientist-Practitioner model with a cognitive-behavioural approach, providing students with expertise, both practical and academic, to enable them to work as professional Clinical Psychologist in a variety of clinical settings.

The DCP/MSc involves three years of full-time study and includes three components; academic course work, supervised clinical internships and research. The academic coursework involves lectures, workshops, forums and seminars by the University academic staff. Qualified Clinical Psychologists and Neuropsychologists who work in a variety of teaching hospitals and clinics in the Sydney area provide supervised clinical internships. For interested Interns, Internships may also be available in rural and remote areas. The research component requires students to produce, by the second semester of their third year, a Master of Science research thesis.

All students are expected to complete a double degree. Students initially enrol only in the coursework degree (DCP). In second year second semester they also enrol in the research degree (MSc). On completion of all requirements for both degrees at the end of the third year, students will graduate with a DCP and a MSc degree.

Students who have made excellent progress and whose projects are of sufficient scope and merit may apply in the first semester of the third year for transfer to a PhD degree, subject to approval and satisfactory production of a thesis proposal. Students who transfer to a PhD will graduate only when they complete requirements for both DCP & PhD degrees. The DCP & PhD double degrees involve at least four and a half years of full time study.

The DCP/MSc program is offered full time, part time places are not available. All components of the program are offered during business hours. Intake for the DCP/MSc is only accepted for the March semester of each year. Mid year intake is not available. The programs are not available by distance education. Single unit of study enrolment is not permitted. The DCP/MSc replaces the two year Master of Clinical Psychology (MPsychol) degree, therefore the MPsychol is no longer offered at the University of Sydney.
