Starting Clinical Placements

1. BULK COMPLIANCE CHECKING

The Ministry of Health has implemented a new system for all clinical placements at NSW Health facilities - ClinConnect. It is mandatory that all students attend a bulk ClinConnect Clinical Placement Compliance Check session in 2012, in order to be verified as compliant and eligible for allocation to NSW Health clinical placements in 2013. Students only need to undergo compliance checking once during their degree.

Session 1: Wednesday 12 September 11.45 - 12.15 (DCP2 Students)
Session 2: Wednesday 12 September 12.15 - 12.45 (DCP1 Students)
Students to arrive 15mins prior to scheduled start of session.

In order to be deemed compliant by NSW Health students need to supply the following completed documentation at the above in-person compliance checking session. 2. STANDARD REQUIREMENTS TO START CLINICAL PLACEMENTS

Judy Hyde, coordinator of clinical placements, arranges allocation of DCP/MSc students to clinical placements. Students are required to complete and submit the following information prior to commencing internal clinical placements and prior to commencing external clinical placements, as directed. All required forms are available from the Faculty of Science or Student Centre or downloaded from NSW Health. NSW Health Instructions are provided for students undertaking clinical placements.

  • Registration (Internal and External)
    Psychology Board of Australia
    APHRA National Register
    Prior to commencing the DCP/MSc program, all students were required to apply for provisional or full registration with Psychology Board of Australia. Following successful application, the Psychology Board of Australia mails a Certificate of Registration to your home address. Registration details may also be looked up online on the National Register. Prior to 2011 students were issued with a 'NSW Psychologists Registration Board Authority to Practice' card.
    Internal - Download PBA registration forms. Admin Officer, Belinda Ingram, checks AHPRA online register.
    External - Submit certificate to External Supervisor.
  • National Police Certificate (NPC) (Internal and External)
    Instructions for National Criminal Check
    All students undertaking clinical placements are required to undertake a National Criminal Record Check and obtain a National Police Certificate. Overseas students, in addition to obtaining a National Police Certificate, are also required to obtain a Police Certificate (with english translation) from their home country and any country they have resided in, or if unobtainable a statutory declaration with no offences. For students with no criminal history, the NPC is accepted as proof of clearance for clinical placements. For students with a criminal history, they are required to apply to the NSW Department of Health, Corporate Governance and Risk Management, External Relations and Employment Screening Unit (ERESU) to undergo a risk assessment in order to be issued with a Clinical Placement Authority or conditional letter. The NPC is valid for three years from the date of issue. The Clinical Placement Authority card and the conditional letter will have a ‘valid to’ date on determined by the NSW Health. The NPC or Clinical Placement Authority card / Conditional Letter must be valid for the entire period of the clinical placement. If the clearance expires at any time during the period of your placement you will be required to re-apply for clearance prior to the start of your placement. The NPC is retained by the student.
    Prior to 2011, students were issued with a 'NSW Health Clinical Placement Authority' card. Students must ensure that the clearance is valid for the entire period of their clinical placement. If your clearance expires at any time during the period of your placement you will be required to re-apply for clearance prior to the start of your placement.
    Internal - Obtain form from Faculty of Science or Student Centre at enrolment. Submit copy of certificate to Admin Officer, Belinda Ingram
    External - Download National Police Check (form P799). Submit to External Supervisor

    Working with Children check (Internal and External)
    At the commencement of internal and external clinical placements, students will be required to provide a signed Commission for Children and Young People Student Declaration form.
    Internal - Obtain Student Declaration form (with SID) from Faculty of Science or Student Centre at enrolment. Submit to Student Centre.
    External - Download NSW Health Student Declaration form. Submit to External Supervisor.
  • NSW Health Code of Conduct (External)
    At the commencement of external clinical placements, students will be required to provide a form stating that they have read and understood the NSW Health Code of Conduct.

    Students on external clinical placements are required to comply with the NSW Health Policy Directive by having the required or recommended vaccinations and providing the Vaccination record card to the External Supervisor.
    External - Obtain card from Faculty of Science or Student Centre at enrolment. Submit to External Supervisor.
  • Student Undertaking (Internal)
    Students undertaking placements are required to sign the NSW Health ‘Student Undertaking’ agreeing to notify the NSW Department of Health if they are charged or convicted of any criminal offences after the date of issue of their National Police Certificate or during the completion of their course. The student must read and sign the undertaking and return the signed form to the Student Centre.

  • Professional indemnity insurance (External)
    The professional indemnity insurance form covers students on clinical placements. Students are required to download the form and provide their supervisor with a copy for each external clinical placement.

  • Clinical Placement forms (Internal and External)

    For all internal and external clinical placements, students are required to complete the following forms: Supervision contract, Mid Placement Review (MPR), End of Placement Review (EPR), Weekly Clinic Logs and an Trainee's Evaluation. Forms may be downloaded from the web. Forms are to be filed in the clinical placements folder and submitted to the Admin Assistant (Cindy Li).
  • Honorary Associate appointed Clinical Supervisors (External)
    Apply to be appointed as an Honorary Associate
    If your supervisor is not currently appointed as an "Honorary Associate" Clinical Supervisor at the University of Sydney, they will be required to be formally appointed before commencing supervision. For the student to be covered by the University's insurance the supervisor must be formally appointed to the University as an Honorary Associate.
