Non-Degree in Psychology

Who is eligible to apply for Non-degree study in Psychology?

Applicants for Non-degree study in Psychology must be graduates holding a Bachelor of Science, Arts, Economics (Social Science) or Liberal studies degree from the University of Sydney, or equivalent degree as deemed by the Faculty.

What will you study as a Non-degree student?

You may study any undergraduate unit of study offered by the School of Psychology, as long as you have successfully completed the necessary qualifying units of study, but have not previously completed the unit itself, within the previous ten years.

Who is likely to want to undertake Non-degree study in Psychology?
  1. Graduates who have not previously studied Psychology in their first degree, or have studied only a small amount of Psychology. Such students would enrol in our introductory Psychology units of study PSYC1001 and 1002 as Non-degree students. They may then wish to apply to continue study of Psychology as a Graduate Diploma in Psychology student. (The Diploma consists of a minimum of 48 units of Intermediate (Year 2) and Senior (Year 3) Psychology. See the separate web page)
  2. Graduates who have already completed a considerable amount of undergraduate Psychology, but who wish to complete additional units of Intermediate or Senior Psychology (less than 24 credit points) to be eligible to apply for a fourth year in Psychology, or who simply wish to study units additional to those studied in their undergraduate degree.

Note that it is not possible to complete a full sequence of Psychology units of study as a Non-degree student. Only a full sequence of Psychology units completed within the BA, BSc, B Liberal Studies, BEcon(SocSci) or the Graduate Diploma in Psychology is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as leading to a fourth year of study in Psychology (Honours or Honours equivalent).

When can I commence?

Entry is possible in either February or July semester each year. For those wishing to study PSYC1001 and 1002, note that either order is possible. Students who begin with PSYC1002 in July semester may wish to complete PSYC1001 in either the following February Semester, or by the Summer School in January. Students may also complete PSYC1002 in Summer School in January and complete PSYC1001 in the February Semester.
